The Witch Oracle has begun seeing visions of blood, fire, and human bones. And when a mysterious box is delivered to Kate’s doorstep, a threat of war from the ancient enemy who nearly destroyed her family, she knows their time is up.
Kate Daniels sees no other choice but to combine forces with the unlikeliest of allies. She knows betrayal is inevitable. She knows she may not survive the coming battle. But she has to try.
For her child.
For the world.
Every good things must come to and end, or so people keep saying. Magic Triumphs is that end for the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. I’m devastated. Not because it was bad but because it is the end, no more books about Kate ;( I’ll have to console myself with the Iron Covenant but it is not the same… )
I started reading the series last year after a friend recommended it. I ate up the first six books like my life depended on it. The story, the main characters, the love drama, the action – it all just clicked in place for me. Until these series I have always hesitated when asked ‘What is your favorite book or series?’ because there are so many I like. But now I know I won’t hesitate (too bad the whole series doesn’t have a name 😀 )
Magic Triumphs is the culmination of the whole saga and even though it escalated to a ten it started slow just like any of the other books. We got a few unrelated kills, each more horrific than the other, which slowly showed the connection in time. We made a full circle when it comes to the bad guy – and I am not talking about just Roland.
While reading the other books I’m sure you’ve noticed the growth in Kate’s character but after finishing the series I had to stop and compose myself and think back to the beginning and the difference is enormous.
She started as a loner, a mercenary who cared about getting paid, getting stronger and keeping her secret. At the end she is a wife, a mother, a friend and a leader. The exact opposite of what her step-father, Voron, taught her to be. As a reader I find this awesome, as a writer I am in awe. I only hope I’ll be able to develop my characters so skillfully.
The battle at the end (you didn’t think there wouldn’t be one, did you?) is awesome from every point. Logical, intense and really really thought through. And we get the most unexpected allies giving us flair and diversity like none of the other books. And there are dragons!!
Okay, I won’t spoil any more, I hate spoilers, but I do love how Ilona Andrews chose to finish it. It felt just right. I almost cried.
I’ll give Magic Triumphs 5/5 since I can’t give it more. The series have now a special place in my heart and I am sure I’ll be re-reading it soon enough.
